Today, our team at Spencer Granite is here to help answer some of the most common questions about our granite countertops.

Why is granite special?

Granite is one of the most popular choices for remodeling their kitchens. But why? It is because of how beautiful and durable the material is. Granite comes in an extensive variety of colors, allowing it to match any pre-existing colors in your kitchen easily. The material is also a tough substance. It is scratch-resistant and temperature-resistant. It is so strong that if you cut something on your granite countertop without a mat, it will not harm the material at all. In addition to these facts, it is stain resistant, allowing for little to no maintenance for clean-up.

What is the difference between granite and marble?

While both stones are quarried from the Earth, this is probably the only thing the two have in common. Granite is formed in the Earth’s mantle at extremely high temperatures. Granite is a very hard material and is made from crystallized materials. On the other hand, marble starts as a sediment. It is a mixture of animal skeletons, plant matter, shells, slit, and more that gather at the bottom of bodies of water. After millions of years, everything solidifies together into marble stone.

Is there anything bad for granite countertops?

Despite everything mentioned above, granite does have some weaknesses. Here is a small list of items you should be cautious about around your new granite countertop.

  • Working with raw meat on your countertop.
  • Dropping heavy items on it.
  • Sitting or standing on your countertop.
  • Setting hot pans on your countertop. (This weakens the sealant rather than the granite underneath.)
  • Using acidic things or cleaners on your countertop.

What type of care does a granite countertop need?

While your countertop will not need very much attention after it is installed, you will need to clean and protect it every once in a while. It’s not recommended to use acidic products on the surface as they may damage the sealant. However, you can simply clean your countertop with a warm, soapy dishrag. Follow it up with a quick towel dry, and you are good to go. As far as sealant for your counter, it is recommended that you reseal your countertop at least once each year. This ensures that your counter will be protected and stay look brand new for as long as you decide to keep it.
