In our previous article, we talked about the dos and don’ts of owning a granite countertops. One thing we mentioned was cleaning your kitchen countertops with mild soap and water as a safe ‘do.’  Although this is an excellent method for daily maintenance, sometimes your counters may need a bit more attention.

Homemade cleaners are an excellent solution when it concerns granite care. They’re easy to make, budget-friendly, and safe on your investment since they’re free from chemicals. In this article, we’re providing you with an easy to make,  homemade cleaner for next time life gets a little messy!

What you’ll need

To begin, start by gathering the following items:

  • ½ cup isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol)
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ½ teaspoon castile soap (select a pure grade formula)
  • High-quality essential oil (optional but always recommended)

Instructions

Have a glass spray bottle handy. This is especially important if you’re using essential oils as a higher quality oil will corrode plastics. Begin by combining all of your ingredients into the bottle.

That’s it, you’re done! It’s that easy!

One thing to remember is that you’ll need to gently shake the bottle before each use as ingredients often separate and settle.

Essential oils

With the latest craze in the world of essential oils, it’s critical to remember one thing. Like any product, there are quality oils, and there are less than ideal oils available to consumers. The lessor quality oils contain additives that defeat the purpose of buying the oil in the first place. Do your research and check ingredients before assuming you’re buying something good.

For example, companies like Doterra mindfully source and provide consumers a pure product. So pure, that many of the oils are ingestible. Thus, a perfect, chemical free solution to apply on a surface where your family eats!

Of course, there are several companies to select between. When choosing, consider how the oil is sourced, if additives are used, and (of course) your budget. Remember, a high quality oil will go a long way.

Once you’ve found a company that works for you, choosing the oil is a different adventure! If you’re new to essential oils, keep it simple. Lemon is a wonderful choice as it provides a clean scent and is a powerful cleansing agent. Disinfecting both the air and the surface, lemon is widely accessible and easy on the wallet. However, other oils that are wonderful in the kitchen are lavender, eucalyptus, grapefruit, and basil.
